Nico Fischer studied Chemical engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, before joining the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Catalysis c*change at the University of Cape Town as a PhD student in 2007. Under the supervision of Prof Michael Claeys.

After graduation in 2011, Nico joined BASF SE in Ludwigshafen, Germany, as research team leader. In 2014 he returned to the Catalysis Institute at UCT, initially as Senior Research Officer and is currently an Associate Professor. Nico has been active in the Catalysis Society of South Africa, acting as Media Officer, Chairperson and currently as secretary. He also Initiated the African Neutron and Synchrotron Data Analysis Competency project.

He has published extensively, both in form of scientific journals as well as patents, and has been awarded several awards such as the BASF Sunrise Innovation Award in 2013, The Young Scientist Price 2016 by the International Congress on Catalysis, as patents, and has been awarded several awards such as the BASF Sunrise Innovation Award in 2013, The Young Scientist Prize 2016 by the International Congress on Catalysis, the Young Researcher Award by the UCT College of Fellows in 2020 and was recently named a Distinguished International Associate by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

His work focuses on the development and design of novel catalytic materials used predominantly in synthesis gas conversion and CO2 activation reactions with a strong focus on in situ and operando material characterizations.
